2-year Research Assistant in Advancing Thermal Management for Megawatt Planar Magnetics

At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, AAU Energy, a position as Research Assistant in advancing thermal management for megawatt planar magnetics, is open for appointment from September 1st 2025 or soon hereafter.

 AAU Energy is a dynamic engineering research department in continuous growth and inspiring surroundings.
AAU Energy has a very international environment and covers all areas of clean and sustainable energy systems of the future within electrical, thermal and mechatronic energy technology. AAU Energy has campuses in both Aalborg and Esbjerg, this position is in Aalborg.
The mission is to be world leading in both research and research-based education of the energy engineers of the future. AAU Energy has approx. 300 employees of many nationalities, of which 25 are administrative staff. In addition, AAU Energy constantly has approx. 50-70 guest researchers from around the world.
Research and teaching are in the absolute world elite in the field of energy, and we have extensive and leading workshop and laboratory facilities, where research and innovation are carried out in direct collaboration with industry to a great extent.
The position is offered in relation to the research program "Sustainable Power Electronics and Electrification (SPELL)" and the research assistant will be positioned in the section for Power Electronics Systems and Materials.

Your work tasks and competencies
Research areas will be within high-power magnetic components enabled by planar technologies for electrification systems at AAU Energy.
The potential candidate should have direct experience in power electronics and hold a master’s degree in power electronics, thermal engineering, or a closely related field. The following skills and qualifications are expected to support the team in addressing key challenges:

1. Solid experience with FEM-based analysis tools (e.g., COMSOL, ANSYS) for thermal analysis of power components.
2. A track record of developing innovative solutions to enhance the thermal performance of power electronic components.
3. A strong understanding of thermal mechanisms in power components, with hands-on experience prototyping novel solutions, potentially involving advanced materials.
4. A demonstrated sense of responsibility for assigned tasks and activities, along with proven ability to collaborate effectively within a team.
5. An openness to exploring and researching challenging topics in thermal management and power electronics.
   

Qualification requirements 
Appointment as a research assistant requires academic qualifications at master's degree level.
