The Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Energy, Section for Mechatronic Systems

At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, AAU Energy, a position as Postdoc in Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy and Advanced Signal Processing for Lithium-Ion battery diagnostics is available from 1st of March 2026 (or as soon as possible thereafter) for a two-year period.

Lithium-ion batteries are central to the global green transition, powering technologies ranging from electric vehicles to large-scale energy storage systems. Despite their widespread use, these batteries are subject to complex and interconnected degradation processes that can significantly impact performance and lifetime.
At the system level, degradation reduces both energy and power throughput, while at the fundamental level it originates from multiple root causes within the electrodes. This position offers a unique opportunity to investigate degradation mechanisms in depth using advanced analytics, signal processing, and frequency-domain diagnostics based on electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The overarching goal is to enable root-cause identification of degradation through EIS-based methodologies.

Project Context
The position is part of the REVIVE project, a highly multidisciplinary project funded by the European Research Council (ERC), exploring anti-aging protocols to counteract degradation in lithium batteries. For this position, we seek an experienced EIS expert capable of performing precise EIS measurements and interpreting complex data using advanced post-processing techniques (e.g., Distribution of Relaxation Times or DRT). The postdoc will also contribute to the development of an experimental setup for lithium-ion battery testing integrated with an EIS system. Through design-of-experiment, the setup will be employed for controlled aging of the cells. Diagnostics and characterization will follow, including EIS data interpretation through
advanced signal processing tools, as well as through postmortem analysis via Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM).
The project also offers the opportunity to collaborate closely with multi-domain experts within the
REVIVEs team and other projects, as well as a range of stakeholders from a prestigious advisory board. This multidisciplinary and high-visibility environment provides excellent opportunities for professional and career development.

The position is offered in relation to the research group "Electric Mobility and Drives" and the Postdoc will
be positioned in the section for Mechatronics.

Your role

You will:
  • Contribute to the hands-on development and operation of experimental battery test setups
  • Perform regular controlled battery aging experiments and EIS characterisation
  • Conduct advanced postprocessing of battery EIS data (e.g., using distribution of relaxation times)
  • Collaborate with the rest of the team across projects on modelling, optimization, and
    electrochemistry
  • Contribute to high-impact publications and knowledge dissemination in flagship forums.
    Your profile
The ideal candidate holds a PhD in Electrical Engineering, Electrochemistry, Energy Systems, or a closely related field, preferably with a focus on batteries and EIS diagnostics. Preferred qualifications include:
  • Practical and theoretical knowledge on electrochemical impedance spectroscopy
  • Signal processing and optimization skills for impedance data analysis
  • Good hands-on skills working with battery electrode setups and EIS instrumentation
  • Familiarity with post-mortem analysis (cell disassembly in glovebox) and characterization with scanning electron microscopy is a plus
  • Experience with computational tools such as MATLAB, Python or relevant tools
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and a commitment to publishing in
    leading scientific venues

What we offer

  • A stimulating research environment with access to world-class labs and computational facilities
  • Close supervision and collaboration within a dynamic, visible (ERC-funded), and international battery research team
  • Opportunities for career development, including mentoring and support for developing independent research ideas
  • Engagement in projects at the forefront of green energy transition and advanced battery technology
