At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Materials and Production, Aalborg University (AAU), one or more positions as Assistant Professor or Associate Professor with Expertise in Artificial Intelligence and Its Applications are available from 1. April, 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter.
The position as Assistant Professor will be a three-year position and the Associate Professor position will be a permanent position.
Research Profile
We are seeking a candidate who combines scientific excellence with practical impact, thrives in a multidisciplinary environment, and is committed to advancing AI-driven solutions for complex systems.
The successful candidate should hold a Ph.D. in Computer Science, Operations Research, Applied Mathematics, or a closely related field, with a strong background in AI/ML technologies, including algorithm development, optimization, and data-driven modeling. Candidates are expected to demonstrate research leadership, with experience in national and international research projects, and a strong publication record in top journals and conferences with an experience level matching the application as either assistant or associate professor.
The candidate will extend and complement the AI4OR group’s research profile, focusing on one or more of the following areas (not limited to):
AI/ML for optimization, decision-making, and complex autonomous or cyber-physical systems Data-driven and hybrid modeling approaches for large-scale, stochastic systems Applied AI in industrial, environmental, or public domains, integrating diverse datasets for real-world problem-solving Algorithm design, implementation, and deployment for high-impact, interdisciplinary applications
Teaching Responsibilities
As an Assistant / Associate Professor, you will contribute to teaching and supervision in the AI4OR group. This includes:
Teaching and supervising courses in AI, Operations Research, Data Science, and related areas at bachelor and master levels Leading practical exercises using computational and modeling tools Supervising BSc and MSc projects and contributing to course and program planning

Qualification requirements
Assistant professor
Appointment as assistant professor requires academic qualifications at PhD level. The research potential of each applicant will be emphasized in the overall assessment.
Associate professor
Appointment as an associate professor requires research and teaching qualifications at the level that can be achieved through the satisfactory completion of a period of employment as an assistant professor but may also be obtained in other ways.
It is a precondition that applicants have documented research at an international standard. In addition, applicants are assumed to have received supervision and pedagogical skills development and to have obtained a positive written assessment of their teaching qualifications.

The Department of Materials and Production (MP) is a wide-ranging research and educational environment at Aalborg University. The Department's mission is to meet the future's demands for new materials and production systems by directing the whole value chain from basic material understanding to materials' applications in mechanical construction, industrial production, and management. The department has several strong, international, and innovative research groups that comprise everything from basic science to strategic and applied research. The activities encompass research and education within materials, mechanics, physics, production, and industrial management and innovation.
