At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Electronic Systems, one or more positions as Assistant Professor in Electronic Systems are open for appointments from February 1, 2026, or soon after. The positions are available for a period of 4 years (with the possibility of tenure-track). The positions are with the department's research groups located at the university campus in Copenhagen.

In electronic engineering, Aalborg University is known worldwide for its high academic quality and societal impact. The Department of Electronic Systems employs more than 200 people, of which about 90 are PhD students, and about 40 % of all employees are internationals. In total, it has more than 700 students in its BSc and MSc programs, which are based on AAU's problem-based learning model.
The department leverages its unique research infrastructure and lab facilities to conduct world-leading fundamental and applied research within communication, networks, control systems, AI, sound, cyber security, and robotics. Your profile and work tasks
We seek to appoint one or more Assistant Professors (with the possibility of Tenure-Track) to conduct research, teaching, and knowledge exchange, and to grow and develop the department's research activities within our subject fields.
The positions require internationally recognized research experience within one or more of the following areas:
• Cyber security
• Privacy engineering
• Computer Engineering
• Edge/cloud computing and networking
The main tasks and responsibilities include:
• developing a research profile and providing valuable contributions to science.
• providing research-based teaching and supervision within at least one subject area.
• participating in grant application activities
• coordinating own projects and contributing to an active academic environment.
Your Competencies
You have an interest in collaborating with external partners and experience from participating in grant applications. You have also contributed to workplace well-being, collaboration, equal treatment, diversity, and a good working environment.
Selected candidates should demonstrate development potential in science and have peer-reviewed publications in recognized journals and books or anthologies. Under the leadership of others, you can plan and carry out individual teaching and supervision activities with a focus on the students' learning.
Qualification requirements
Appointment as assistant professor requires academic qualifications at PhD level. The research potential of each applicant will be emphasized in the overall assessment.
Tenure-Track
Tenure-Track Assistant Professors are appointed for a six-year period, with the opportunity for promotion to a tenured Associate Professor position based on performance. Candidates are expected to demonstrate international academic standing through competitive research achievements or show strong potential for future scholarly impact.
AAU places particular emphasis on the following qualifications during the tenure-track appointment:
• Demonstrated autonomy in academic and professional development.
• Exceptional potential and standing within the candidate’s field.
• Experience across multiple universities or research institutions, preferably including international exposure.
• Strong communication skills and proficiency in academic English.
• A clear trajectory toward meeting the criteria for permanent employment at AAU by the end of the tenure-track period.
Evaluation and promotion proces
• Annual internal follow-ups to review progress on the promotion plan and ensure the assistant professor remains on track.
• A mid-term evaluation, based on external review, conducted by an internal assessment committee after three years.
• A final review by an external committee after 5.5 years. A positive outcome leads to a tenured appointment as Associate Professor.
Transition to Tenure
The final assessment typically occurs within the last six months of the tenure-track period. However, candidates may request an earlier evaluation within the first four years. If the initial assessment is negative, a second evaluation may be requested during the final six months. A maximum of two assessments is permitted.
To qualify for promotion to Associate Professor, candidates must demonstrate
• Research qualifications equivalent to the level that can be achieved on the basis of satisfactorily completed employment as tenure track assistant professor.
• Documented scientific output at an international level, based on up to ten selected publications.
• Evidence of pedagogical development, including positive teaching evaluations and a comprehensive teaching portfolio.
• Active participation in academic environments and collaborative initiatives.
• Proven experience in securing research grants and effectively disseminating research to relevant audiences.
Assessment will be based on Criteria for merit at the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Aalborg University, and the goals outlined in the progress and promotion plan.
Failure to request an assessment within the final year, or a negative final evaluation, will result in the initiation of dismissal procedures in accordance with the applicable collective agreement.
